Get Vendio Gallery - Now FREE! Stunning set of Louis-Phillipe era sterling silver vermeil flatware comprised of 5 piece place settings for 20! Crafted by mastersmith Jean-Baptiste Veyrier , this exuberant pattern features strapped handles, tips adorned with shell motifs and swathed in rocailles on either side, palmetto garlands at the top of the handles, as well as midway, graced by more rocailles. At the top back end of the spoons and forks is a palmetto frond topped by what I can only describe as a sun or star burst decoration. With resignation I will say it is a shell motif; but the ebullience of the entire pattern suggests to me stars bursting in air. The heavy coating of 18k or 22k gold definitely contributes to the celebratory sensation accompanying this pattern. Also included are 2 serving spoons; although these are more correctly called sugar sifting ladles, a'saupoudreuse' in French. And while getting technical, this service is a dessert service, possibly also an entremet or lunch service, not a service for dinner. Frankly, since French silverware is so massive compared to US and UK silverware, few would know this seated at your table to a fine dinner. The knives are interesting in that these are made by two mastersmiths.

Not so unusual in the sense that collaboration among silversmiths was practiced in particular when large services were being produced to order. But in this case it would appear that the original handles were damaged or considered undesirable for some other reason and the blades, produced by a renowned cutlery maker, were deemed worthy of preservation. Said cutlerer was Auguste-Demophile Touron ; on the blades is the clarion "Touron Fr du Roi". Touron , therefore, made cutlery for French royalty at the highest level. The handles were made by Eugene Chevron in the late 1800s.

Touron was active much earlier, in the earlier 1800's, specifically 1824. The set is complete: 20 forks, spoons, demitasse spoons, steel bladed knives and sterling bladed knives. This set is dramatic, lively, in tiptop shape and will set your table to glistening perfection.

Marks: All pieces bear the Minerve 1st titre: French sterling standard. The forks and spoons marked with the maker's punch for Jean-Baptiste Veyrier. The knives: handles bear the maker's punch for Eugene Chevron and the punch for.

All blades bear the maker's punch for Touron. The vermeil blades are marked with Touron's punch; but also the Socrates 1st titre.

In addition, these sterling blades bear the Paris city guarantee for large objects. Finally, some of the knife handles are punched with the Minerve 2nd titre. Dimensions: Forks are 7.25 long, weigh 53 grams. Spoons are 7.5 long, weigh 51 grams.

Demitasse spoons are 6 long, weigh 26 grams. Knives with steel blades are 8.25 long, weigh 42 grams. Silver bladed knives are 8 long and weigh 39 grams. Serving ladles: 8" long, 2.5" wide and weight is 64 grams and 69 grams. Combined weight without the steel bladed knives: 3513 grams, 112 troy ounces; with the steel bladed knives: 4293 grams, 138 troy ounces.
