This is a sterling silver serving spoon in a three dimensional fuchsia pattern, made by Whiting during the 1870s. It has 3D leaves applied to the handle and bowl. A beautifully constructed figural fuschia blossom is applied to the handle, which takes the form of a flower stem. The gold-washed bowl has a matte texture and retains much of its original gilding.
Although Whiting did not apply its mark to these spoons, this spoon is stamped STERLING and 8. This is a beautiful example of American silver from the Aesthetic movement, which drew its inspiration from Japanese design as well as from nature.
This serving spoon--perhaps a casserole or berry spoon--is approximately 10 inches long and weighs approximately 65 grams. Aside from a slight ding in the bottom of the bowl, it's in excellent antique condition, with no repairs that I can see and minimal wear for an object close to a century and a half old; I will leave any cleaning or polishing to the new owner.
