Part of the original inventory for Tiffany's first Paris store. An exquisite Tiffany Chrysanthemum ice cream or dessert service in the original box. This pattern, created in 1880, is still in use today. It is one of Tiffany's most opulent and popular patterns, ever. This set is unused, in the original box, and filled with pieces made expressly for the French market.

In France, there are types of flatware, such as the'sugar sifter', used to sprinkle powdered sugar onto crepes, which we don't normally find in the United States. In addition, French sterling silver is bigger and heavier that flatware in the US , and the UK.

These features add to the uniqueness and value of this set. I t is complete ; there are no monograms and it in mint condition. The Chrysanthemum pattern was designed by the renowned Tiffany silversmith, Charles T. Grosjean, and first offered in 1880.

It is among Tiffany's most expensive, enduring, and popular patterns. From the outset the Chrysanthemum pattern wowed Victorian high-society crowds. Briefly discontinued early in the 1900's, it was brought back by popular demand.

And so it remains: this Art Nouveau pattern is among Tiffany's most exuberant, enduring highly desirable and collectable. Chrysanthemum is an expensive, labor intensive die-made pattern. It requires extensive hand finishing to produce. This is a set we may easily imagine a part of the original production of this magnificent and heralded pattern. Then again, a collector may wish to keep it as is, unused, pristine, like a coin freshly minted and encased in protective material.

One additional indication that this service was created for the French market appears on the label found inside the box on the silver lining ; the store address'Ave de L'Opera' may be found directly below New York under Tiffany & Co. Another French connection is that the pieces that are unique to this set are especially heavy ; in France flatware is invariably much heavier than US and UK flatware.

And in line with the saupoudreuse described above as a signature piece of French flatware services, next and notable is the ice cream "slice". This piece is a whopping 12 long, boasting a uniquely large shaped blade. The blade is 3 at the widest.

On o ne side there is a thin flat edge for `slicing' into the ice cream, and on the opposing edge a deep undulating `bowl' shaped side with a depth of 1/2"-2/3". This design a practical solution to the problem of the ice cream portion sliding off the slice once separated from the larger portion of ice cream. The blade is delicately engraved with a floral foliate decoration comprised of long flowing tendril-like floral sprigs and leafy fronds. The serving sugar spoon is also a plus plus size and it has a winged bowl design. Completing the set are a dozen individual ice cream spoons.

Easy to see why this pattern retains its popularity and value, don't you agree? Condition : Each piece is as close to mint as possible; no flaws, no imperfections. The only indication of use some faint marks consistent with an occasional polishing. Each piece has its place in the original fitted box, lined with `Tiffany blue' silk, emblazoned in gold with the name Tiffany & Co and locations New York and Ave De L'Opera Paris. There is some wear on the outside of the box and some light soil on the silk.

Dimensions : The sugar sifter is 7" long, the bowl 2.5" diameter and weighs 90 grams. The Sugar spoon is 9 long, 2 2/8' wide and weighs 133 grams. The ice cream slice is 12" long & 3" at the widest. The slice weighs 132 grams. The ice cream spoons are 6" long, 1.25" wide and weigh 42 grams.

Combined silver weight is 859 grams. The original fitted box is 20" wide, 15" front to back and 2.5 thick or deep. Please visit our Charon's Spoils Antiques gallery! Check out my other items.
