Spectacular and rare antique French Louis XVI era sterling silver and vermeil soup tureen, complete with original silver liner. Raised on a round base, the tureen's body is embellished with repoussé and chased floral garlands, with cartouches to either side flanked by Mascarons surmounted by a depiction of Cupid with bow and arrow.

One cartouche is decorated with a depiction of a Roman emperor, most probably a later addition due to the desire to conceal a royal coat of arms. As one can fully appreciate, a royal armorial was an absolute necessity to remove / conceal during the French revolution (May 1789 - November 1799)!

On close inspection we noted that this particular cartouche is reinforced on the inside of the bowl, further supporting our theory, and t. He interior of the bowl, lid, and the liner, were then most likely gilded / re-gilded.

The domed lid is decorated with repoussé and chased cartouches depicting. Louis XVI symbols of the Hunt , L.

Usic , and War , and surmounted by a. Cast and chased figural pomegranate finial. Epictions of a Lion's head are featured between the floral bedecked scroll handle mounts. Both tureen and liner are appropriately struck with the Charge (crowned'A' and two'L's interlaced) and Discharge marks (head of a Parrot) for Paris 1787 , the Jurande mark for Paris 1787 , and the maker's mark for renowned Parisian silversmith Pierre-Antoine FAMECHON , active in 1785. The 2'grains' on the maker's mark guarantee the minimum silver content is. Overall condition is excellent, the tureen has a rich patina, and the vermeil (18K gold on silver) is very well preserved.
